As the episode begins, Troublesome Taylor seems to have unofficially moved into the girls' dorm. The roommates want her out, and Bela addresses the situation. Meanwhile, Kimberly stresses over getting a stellar recommendation to secure a spot in the symposium run by her ethics professor. She wants an accomplished person to back her up, but she faces challenges.
In the Black Student Union meeting, Whitney discusses Halloween plans when Canaan appears, awkwardly altering the atmosphere. The facilitator pauses the meeting to address the tension. Whitney explains they’re both dating other people now, but it turns out Canaan has been "hoing" across campus. The group realizes Kanaan has never apologized to Whitney, leading to another interruption. He finally offers her a long-overdue apology.
Kimberly, vying for a spot in the symposium, sits with other overachievers and quickly realizes her competition is more accomplished. She lies about working for the Arizona Governor but later admits the truth.
The new roommate tries to prove herself in her minor role in the school play. She hasn’t fully grabbed my attention yet, but her love interest adds some intrigue. Unfortunately, he’s more engaging than her storyline at this point.
During soccer practice, Whitney’s friend delivers a harsh truth: trying to be friends with an ex like Kanaan won’t work. It leads to unavoidable awkwardness and could create issues in her current relationship. This advice becomes relevant when Whitney and Isaiah head to the gym for what she considers a "real date." They run into Kanaan, who tries to show off and calls Whitney by her nickname, "Chase." The encounter becomes a subtle battle of masculinity, leaving Isaiah feeling insecure. Whitney reassures him, but Kanaan’s presence stirs unresolved emotions. Why would Whitney entertain this after Kanaan’s disrespectful behavior? Frustrating.
Bela and Arvind discuss Taylor’s lingering presence in the dorm, and Bela takes her to a queer speed-dating event. Reluctant at first, Taylor meets someone with a similar personality, offering a glimpse of hope for her character. Later, Bela sets firm boundaries with Taylor and hands back the room key.
Kimberly, determined to succeed, confronts a male student who tries to steamroll her, but her harsh reaction backfires. The professor advises her to approach problems with a more constructive solution, or perhaps the symposium isn’t right for her.
By the end of the episode, I’ve warmed up to Kayce, the new roommate. Her sheltered upbringing and heavy influence from her mother have shaped her interactions, but there’s potential for growth. Whitney, feeling guilty about balancing her dynamic with Kanaan and Isaiah, gets injured during a soccer game. She takes questionable advice from her coach, setting up a storyline I hope will be explored further.
This episode maintains the show’s momentum, even after losing one of the original core four. Another solid installment.
