The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon: The Book of Carol: Episode 5 Recap
In the latest episode, “Vouloir, C'est Pouvoir,” Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) reflects on the future as he and Daryl (Norman Reedus) drive through Paris.
Following the intense events of Episode 4, this installment shifts focus to the surviving characters and their hopes for what's ahead.
Codron (Romain Levi) makes his way to Fallou’s (Eriq Ebouaney) camp for refuge after the chaos at the Nest. Levi delivers a poignant performance that adds depth to the episode, particularly in his interactions with Laurent. Their bond, forged through shared guilt and aspiration, emerges as one of the episode's highlights, showcasing a more nuanced connection than Daryl and Laurent’s somewhat forced relationship.
Meanwhile, Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl are on a mission to meet Ash (Manish Dayal) at a race track. Carol feels apprehensive about introducing Daryl to
Ash, as the latter believes she has come to find her daughter. Their comedic exchanges lighten the mood, particularly Daryl’s disbelief that Carol could claim he’s her brother. This dynamic hints at the complexities in Daryl and Carol’s relationship, adding layers to their character development.
Upon discovering Ash is missing, Carol and Daryl return to Fallou to inform Laurent about Isabelle's death. Laurent is visibly burdened by his role in the Union of Hope, longing for a return to normalcy, which makes his rejection of Daryl's offer to return home all the more heartbreaking. This moment signifies Daryl's struggle with guilt over the situation, especially after Laurent reveals Isabelle expressed love for him.
To locate Ash, the duo revisits the Demimonde nightclub, now run by Anna (Lukerya Ilyashenko). Initially skeptical about featuring a nightclub, I found it fitting as a glimpse of what some survivors might crave post-apocalypse. Carol's curiosity about this world contrasts with her past as a controlled housewife, adding humor to her character arc.
As they navigate through the remnants of Genet’s army at the club, they ultimately find Ash in a precarious situation. The scene shifts to action as Daryl and Carol expertly fight off walkers surrounding Ash. Their teamwork shines, even as the episode weaves in moments of levity amidst the chaos.
Carol discovers Daryl’s Dictaphone in Genet's office, revealing his thoughts during his time in France, including his desire to return to her. This discovery hints at deeper connections that could emerge in future episodes.
When Ash learns the truth about Carol’s intentions, his initial anger is tempered by gratitude for her intervention. However, he doesn’t question her motives, highlighting the tension in their relationships. The climax sees Laurent pursued by Losang (Joel de la Fuente) and his followers, leading to a tense showdown where Daryl and Codron unite to protect the boy.
As the episode draws to a close, Laurent agrees to travel to the U.S. with the group. However, a new dilemma arises when Ash reveals the plane can’t accommodate all four of them, forcing the group to confront potential sacrifices.
This leaves viewers questioning the future of Carol and Daryl's relationship, as well as their fates in the unfolding story.
Overall, "Vouloir, C'est Pouvoir" blends emotional growth with action, setting the stage for what’s to come while leaving us to ponder the challenges the characters will face ahead.
