Tracker Season 2 Episode 5 Review: Preternatural: Survival, Sacrifice, and Healing: Colter's Darkest Hour

In Tracker Season 2, Episode 5, Colter Manfredi faces one of the most dangerous and harrowing situations of his career, pushing his survival instincts to the limit and forcing him to rely on someone he never imagined would be his lifeline: Emmaline Trace.

This episode takes us deep into Kentucky's rugged woods, where Colter is on the trail of a missing teenager, Emmaline’s sister, who was taken while out looking for something in the woods. As always, Colter is motivated by more than just the reward; it's the personal stakes that make him take the case, especially when it strikes a nerve with Velma, who knows full well Colter isn’t one to back away from a promise—even when the payout is slim. While others may question Colter’s motivations, Tracker fans know better: Colter is driven by a code, and this episode highlights that sense of duty over any monetary gain.

The case in Kentucky introduces us to a town where Colter, as usual, isn't exactly welcomed with open arms. People whisper behind his back, much like the people in Emmaline’s life who see her as something different, something dangerous. Her family is struggling with local superstition and hostility; roadkill is left on their porch, and the town views Emmaline’s unique abilities with suspicion. Colter quickly uncovers that the town’s animosity towards Emmaline has more to do with fear of her "gift"—she’s a healer—than anything else, and it becomes clear that the teenager’s disappearance isn't just the result of a personal vendetta against her brother, Jasper, who’s suspected of being a narc.

In his typical methodical fashion, Colter starts digging, and as expected, he finds that the town’s polite exterior hides a much darker truth. Emmaline isn't just a local oddity—she’s a healer with a rare ability to cure ailments, including a man's cancer.

This revelation sets the stage for the episode's tension: Emmaline has been kidnapped by a group of men who plan to use her powers for their own gain, most notably to heal the father of a dangerous drug-dealing clan.

Despite the increasingly dangerous territory, Colter presses forward alone, without backup, and infiltrates a drug compound crawling with armed men. His entrance into the house is one of the show's trademark moments, where Colter's stealth and resourcefulness take center stage. Inside, he finds Emmaline, forced to heal the patriarch of the Drell family. But what seems like an opportunity to rescue her quickly turns into a standoff, as Emmaline, confused and conflicted by her own powers, hesitates to leave. She feels a moral obligation to use her gift, but Colter reminds her she is not anyone's tool to be exploited.

The emotional crux of the episode is the tension between Colter and Emmaline—he wants her to see herself as more than a healer and to escape with him, but she remains torn. The men holding her captive are ready to use her, and the situation quickly spirals out of control when Emmaline's healing attempt fails to meet their expectations. When Colter takes matters into his own hands, executing one of the Drell family members to create an escape window, things take an even darker turn. Colter and Emmaline flee, but they are outnumbered, and a series of intense, near-death encounters follow. A high-stakes chase through an abandoned mall, with the pair evading capture, only adds to the mounting tension.

In a shocking moment, Colter is shot with an arrow, and as he bleeds out in the woods, it becomes clear how much he's relying on Emmaline. In an unexpected twist, Emmaline, despite her initial hesitations, is the one who saves him. Using her healing powers, she tends to Colter’s wounds in a makeshift first-aid moment that solidifies their bond in a way no one could have predicted.

Colter’s brush with death forces him to reevaluate his views on Emmaline’s abilities. While he has always been skeptical of anything supernatural, he can't deny that without her intervention, he would have died in the woods. This episode raises questions about the nature of Colter's survival: Is it simply about grit and willpower, or is there something more—something outside of himself—that has helped him make it through some of the toughest situations?

The episode ends on a tense note, with the Drell compound finally raided by law enforcement, but the immediate danger is far from over for Emmaline. Though she’s freed from her captors, her ability will likely continue to draw unwanted attention. It’s clear that Emmaline’s life will never be the same, and neither will Colter’s.

With only a few episodes left in the season, Tracker Season 2, Episode 5, sets up what could be a heartbreaking and explosive conclusion. As Emmaline and Colter’s fates intertwine, it’s hard to imagine a future where she is truly safe. The question looms large: Will Colter be able to protect Emmaline from the dark forces that now know just how powerful—and valuable—she is? Or will her unique abilities turn her into a target in a world that doesn’t understand or appreciate her gift?

As always, Tracker excels in weaving complex character arcs and tense, action-packed moments with a deeper emotional undercurrent. It’s a reminder that even the toughest survivalists like Colter can find themselves at the mercy of something they can’t control—and that sometimes, the greatest acts of survival come from the most unexpected sources.
