'Tracker' Season 2 Episode 7 "Man's Best Friend" Recap: Chasing Barkley

In tonight’s episode of Tracker, Colter Shaw embarks on a cross-country journey that takes a series of unexpected turns. While he often finds himself helping people in need, one of the most unusual moments comes when he encounters a dog digging through trash at a gas station. Colter immediately notices the collar, sensing that this wasn’t just a stray. The dog, Barkley, was clearly well cared for, and when a store clerk threatens to harm the dog, Colter steps in to stop him. Gaining Barkley’s trust, Colter manages to get the dog into the back of his truck—but, in a surprising twist, a thief steals the dog while Colter steps away to grab some water.

What makes this theft even more perplexing is how insignificant the dog seemed at first. Barkley was rummaging through the trash, and yet someone went through the trouble of stealing him. When Colter discovers the dog’s home address on the collar, he drives twenty miles to investigate. What he finds is even more bizarre—a mother and son tied up in their home after a violent break-in. The intruder didn’t steal anything except the dog, which raises the question: what made Barkley so valuable?

As Colter dives deeper into the mystery, he learns that the dog had been stolen twice in as many days, and the police are focused entirely on the home invasion, brushing aside Colter’s theory that Barkley’s theft was the key to understanding the whole situation. But Colter doesn’t let that stop him. Aiden, the young boy who owns Barkley, hires Colter to find his dog using his birthday money. This personal mission resonates deeply with Colter, who knows all too well the pain of losing someone close. Aiden had lost his father the previous year, and Barkley had become a lifeline for him. Colter can’t help but feel a sense of duty to return the dog, not just for Aiden, but for the boy’s grieving mother, who had refused an offer to sell Barkley—an act that, in Colter’s eyes, further suggested that the dog was more than just a pet.

As Colter investigates, he uncovers a connection between the dog’s theft and a man named Max Miller, a former soldier who had once struggled with addiction. Max had given Barkley to his friend Nate, who later became involved in the dog’s disappearance. The deeper Colter digs, the more he realizes that Barkley’s theft is connected to something far darker—a shady deal involving stolen statues and a dangerous man named David Lawson. Lawson, a private contractor with a criminal past, is desperately trying to sell the statues to make money, but he’s willing to do anything—including murder—to get what he wants.

For Colter, this case hits close to home. The stakes are personal now—not just for Aiden and his mom, but for Colter himself, who knows all too well how past trauma can shape a person’s decisions. When Colter tracks Max to a meeting with Lawson, things quickly take a turn for the worse when Lawson shoots Max. In that moment, Colter is reminded of how fragile life can be, but he’s also driven by a need to finish what he started. With Barkley’s help, Colter is able to track down Chelsea, Max’s wife, who is still alive and in hiding. The reunion between Chelsea and Max is an emotional moment that reinforces how deeply Colter understands the importance of family and loyalty.

In the end, Colter successfully returns Barkley to Aiden, fulfilling the promise he made to the boy. But it’s more than just about reuniting a dog with its owner—it’s about healing. For Aiden, Barkley was a symbol of hope and a connection to his late father. Colter’s ability to bring them back together feels like a small, but meaningful victory in a world that often seems cruel and indifferent.

After the case is closed, Colter makes an unexpected visit to Reenie’s new office, signaling a rare moment of respite with all three of them in one room. It’s clear that, despite his usual solitary nature, Colter values the people in his life. He’s ready to take a break and recharge—something he truly deserves after such a harrowing adventure. It’s a nice, quiet ending to an episode full of twists, and it’s one that reminds us that even in a world full of mysteries, some things—like friendship and loyalty—are always worth fighting for.
