'Tracker' Season 2 Episode 9 "The Disciple" Review

Writer's picture: RachelRachel

In last night's episode of Tracker, Colter Shaw’s determination was put to the test once again as he dove into a haunting case that had been lingering for years. Colter, a man who usually operates by the logic of a rewardist—helping people find what they’ve lost for the right price—has always tried to maintain emotional distance. But tonight, he couldn't help but be drawn into a case that seemed to embody the very notion of obsession, or as some might call it: his white whale.

Colter was called in to find Gina Pickett, a young woman who had vanished without a trace years ago. She left work one day and was never seen again. This case haunted Colter, and despite years of searching, he hadn’t found a single lead. Gina's sister, Camille, had almost given up hope and wanted to move on, but Colter just couldn't let it go.

This is when he crosses paths with Keaton, a former detective who had helped Colter on a previous case. Together, they dive deep into Gina’s file, determined to crack the mystery. The prime suspect in Gina’s disappearance had always been a man named Frank Whales, a creepy admirer who'd relentlessly pursued her. Despite her clear rejection, he continued to stalk her. When questioned, Whales remained silent—never cracking, no matter how many times Colter broke into his home on the anniversary of Gina’s disappearance. Whales, it seemed, was an enigma Colter just couldn’t get under.

That’s when Keaton took a darker approach. In a twist that left me a bit shaken, Keaton kidnapped one of Whales’s friends and tortured him for information. The shocking truth came out: Whales had been working for a man called “Teacher,” a sinister figure who was the mastermind behind a twisted operation. Whales and his crew had been luring young women, like Gina, and handing them over to Teacher. It was a chilling revelation, especially since Whales and his buddies claimed they didn’t know what happened to the girls after they delivered them. But as it turned out, they knew exactly what was happening—they were complicit in it.

The deeper Colter and Keaton dug, the more disturbing the case became. Colter discovers a significant clue when he revisits Whales’s house and finds Gina’s hairpin—proof that Whales had seen her the night she disappeared. Colter then confronts Whales and uncovers the disturbing details of how Gina was manipulated into meeting the Teacher. Whales had stalked Gina, learned about her interests, and tricked her into getting into his car, ultimately driving her to a secluded barn. He left her there, and the rest, as Colter would soon find out, was far darker than he could have imagined.

The investigation takes a haunting turn when Colter and Keaton discover a tape that reveals Gina's final moments. In the video, Gina is tied up and asked who was most important to her. She responds with her sister's name. The Teacher demands Camille’s contact details, and Gina’s protective response—to scream at the man to stay away from her sister—left me wondering just how much she knew of the danger surrounding her. The tape ended abruptly, leaving me with a chilling feeling that we were so close to understanding the whole truth.

The hunt continues when Colter learns that another young woman, Hannah Olson, has gone missing—just like Gina. And yet another victim, Brandon Stokes, had been targeted. He was a young man with a troubled past, someone who fell victim to Teacher’s twisted manipulation. Colter discovers that Whales, despite being released from his role in the operation due to age, still feels some loyalty to the Teacher and offers to help Colter track him down.

In a dramatic twist, Colter gets Whales a lawyer and convinces him to reveal where the Teacher might be hiding. The trail leads them to an old asylum, but Whales proves more than just a reluctant ally. After escaping Colter’s custody, he ends up saving Colter’s life when Brandon turns violent. Whales, in a moment of redemption, helps Colter track down the Teacher, who, it turns out, is far more dangerous than anyone could have predicted.

The Teacher, revealed to be Noah Darview, a man who had once lured his own victims but was now using others as his disciples, had been hiding in plain sight. He was linked to an elderly man, Patrick Campbell, whose family included Darview’s daughter. Darview had been the mastermind behind this horror for years, and even in his old age, he continued to control young victims like Brandon and Hannah. Ultimately, Colter stops Darview from taking his own life, and after finding Hannah alive, Darview confesses, revealing where the bodies were hidden across state lines.

The case ends with Camille finally getting the closure she had been desperately seeking, but the emotional toll of the hunt was palpable. Tracker did a remarkable job capturing the grim reality of obsessive cases and the toll it takes on those involved. What stood out to me, however, was how personal this case became for Colter. Despite his best efforts to stay detached, his connection to this haunting mystery was undeniable.

This episode was a reminder of how darkness can hide in plain sight and how, sometimes, the hunt for justice isn’t just about finding answers—it’s about finding a way to heal.
