Pamela Hayden, who has voiced Milhouse Van Houten—and several other iconic characters—on The Simpsons for 35 years, is retiring from character voice work. Her final appearance will be in this Sunday’s special “Treehouse of Horror” episode, airing at 8/7c on Fox.
In a heartfelt statement, Hayden shared her emotions about stepping away: “The time has come for me to hang up my microphone, but how do I say goodbye to The Simpsons? Not easily. It’s been an honor and a joy to work on such a funny, witty, and groundbreaking show, and to give voice to Milhouse (and Jimbo Jones, Rod Flanders, Janey, Malibu Stacy, and many others). I’ll always have a special place in my heart for that blue-haired 10-year-old boy with glasses.”
Milhouse, originally introduced in a 1989 Butterfinger commercial, is named after Richard Nixon. Simpsons creator Matt Groening recalled that Milhouse was created because "Bart needed someone to talk to in the school cafeteria," and the name "Milhouse" was chosen for its humorous, “unfortunate” quality. Groening also praised Hayden’s portrayal, saying, “Pamela gave us tons of laughs with Milhouse, the hapless kid with the biggest nose in Springfield. She made Milhouse hilarious and real, and we will miss her.”
Executive producer James L. Brooks and showrunner Matt Selman also spoke highly of Hayden. Brooks described her as "a model for having a great spirit" in every cast she’s been a part of, while Selman said, “Pamela’s talent and joy have added a magic to The Simpsons that will never be forgotten. Everything’s coming up Pamela!”
In her final episode, Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes, a mysterious circus transports Lisa through three eerie stories—one set in the 1950s, another in a chilling retro-present, and a third in a brutalist future dominated by prestige TV.
As for Milhouse’s future, Fox has confirmed that casting for the character and others voiced by Hayden will begin soon.
